The ARTEMIS European Technology Platform was established in June 2004. Its aim was to bring together key players in the Embedded Computing arena across the entire spectrum of industrial sectors by 17 major companies. One of its core tasks was to define a common Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) which acts as a reference for the Embedded Computing domain to attract investment from the stakeholders. The first version of the SRA was published in March 2006.
In addition, the platform's "Mirror Group" gathered representatives from 24 member states and associated countries. This group went on to become a founder of the Joint Undertaking alongside the Commission and ARTEMISIA.
The activities of the ARTEMIS Technology Platform have now been continued by ARTEMISIA, the ARTEMIS Industrial Association. ARTEMISIA was established in January 2007 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands by five founding companies: Philips, ST Microelectronics, Thales, Nokia and DaimlerChrysler. ARTEMISIA represents the interests of industry and the research community within the Joint Undertaking.
ARTEMISIA invites corporate, SMEs and research organisations to join it. Members are entitled to vote in elections, participate in key decisions as well as shape the policies and evolution of the Strategic Research Agenda. It also provides access to an extensive network of respected R&D partners.
The ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking (JU) was established in February 2008 as a Community body based in Brussels by means of a Council Regulation. The ARTEMIS JU will implement significant parts of the Strategic Research Agenda co-funded by industry, research organisations, participating Member States and the Commission's own ICT programme. The ARTEMIS JU will manage and co-ordinate research activities through open calls for proposals.
Joint Technology Initiatives are new mechanisms for running research programmes in the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme. These are long-term public-private partnerships implemented as Joint Undertakings based on Article 171 of the EC Treaty which says that: The Community may set up joint undertakings or any other structure necessary for the efficient execution of Community research, technological development and demonstration programmes.
The ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking is now operational, with its own rules, budget, staff and premises.
